Sickle Cell Uhuru Trust
Sickle Cell Uhuru Trust (SCUT) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to supporting individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD) and improving their quality of life. SCUT was established with the mission of raising awareness, providing support services, advocating for improved healthcare, and promoting research for the benefit of individuals affected by sickle cell disease.
In Kenya Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) has remained a major public health concern, its Management has remained inadequate, National Control Programs do not exist and the basic facilities to manage the patients are limited in majority of the Health Care facilities.
Our Vision
A world where individuals living with sickle cell disease have access to comprehensive care, support, and opportunities to thrive, free from the burdens and limitations imposed by the condition.

What is Sickle cell Disease
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary Blood disorder affecting the Red Blood Cells (RBC) becoming Sickle-Sharped which results into blockage of blood capillaries which prevents flow of Oxygen into vital parts of the body. It also manifests in series of pain episodes e.g swelling of hands and feet (hand-foot syndrome), severe recurrent and unpredictable painful crises as well as acute chest syndrome (pulmonary infarction), bone or, joint necrosis, and renal failure.
Sickle Cell Disease
In individuals with SCD, a genetic mutation causes the body to produce an abnormal form of hemoglobin called hemoglobin S (HbS). This abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid and take on a distinctive crescent or "sickle" shape. Unlike healthy, flexible red blood cells, sickle-shaped cells can get stuck in small blood vessels, leading to blockages and reduced blood flow. This can cause a range of symptoms and health problems.
